The first titanium Galaxy Z Fold could launch in October

Samsung will be releasing a new addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 family for the first time this year. Known as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim or Z Fold FE, this model has been under consideration since Chinese manufacturers introduced their slimmer foldable phones. However, Samsung has now decided to launch it next quarter. After observing the advancements made by Honor, Oppo, OnePlus, Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, and other competitors, Samsung’s executives reportedly tasked their engineering teams with developing a lighter, thinner, and more affordable Galaxy Fold.

To achieve this, Samsung implemented several strategies for the Galaxy Z Fold Slim, including removing certain complex components like the screen digitizer, which also meant sacrificing S Pen support.

Additionally, they may have utilized new materials for the foldable line, such as titanium. They couldn’t surpass the formidable Chinese competitors, as Samsung aimed to make its slim foldable more durable. Nonetheless, their efforts resulted in a reasonably acceptable Z Fold 6 Slim. Samsung succeeded in reducing its thickness and weight, making it more ergonomic than the Z Fold 6.

Indeed, according to The Elec’s supply chain sources in Korea, Samsung is currently considering using a titanium backplate for the Z Fold 6 Slim. This change aims to make the thin phone both lighter and more durable. If implemented, it will mark the first instance of Samsung utilizing costly titanium in a foldable phone, following its use in the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s frame.

At present, Samsung’s foldable devices utilize either steel for the backplate in the Flip series or a carbon fiber blend in the Fold series to avoid interference with the S Pen digitizer. Given that the Z Fold 6 Slim will not support the S Pen, Samsung has the flexibility to use a metal backplate once more and might consider employing strong, lightweight, and costly titanium for the first time in one of its foldable phones.
