Motorola Surges in U.S. as Apple's Shipments Dip
According to data from Counterpoint Research, U.S. smartphone shipments experienced a 5% year-over-year increase in July. Apple led the smartphone market in the U.S. for that month, capturing a substantial 49% market share, which reflects a decrease of 7.5% from the 53% share it held in July of the previous year.
iPhone shipments in the U.S. fell by 4% year-over-year, although sales of the iPhone 15 Pro model saw double-digit growth in the United States during July.
In second place behind Apple, Samsung increased its U.S. market share by four percentage points in July, reaching 28%, which marks an annual growth of 17%. Samsung’s shipments in the U.S. rose by 23% from July 2023 to July 2024. This month, Samsung launched several new products, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, and the new Galaxy Ring.
In the global smartphone market, the top three devices based on sales in the second quarter were led by the iPhone 15, which accounted for 4.1% of worldwide smartphone sales in July.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max followed with a 3.7% share, while the iPhone 15 Pro generated 3.1% of global sales during the same month. Contributing to the sales of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max before the September launch of the iPhone 16 series in the U.S. is Apple’s Apple Intelligence AI initiative.
The Apple Intelligence feature requires 8GB of RAM, making only the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max compatible among currently available models.
With the introduction of the iPhone 16 series on September 9th and its anticipated release shortly after (potentially on September 19th), demand for all four new models—the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max—is expected to be high, as all will come equipped with 8GB of RAM, ensuring that all of Apple’s 2024 iPhone models will support Apple Intelligence.
Motorola is experiencing significant growth in the United States, driven by the launch of the new Razr + (2024) clamshell foldable phone.
The company’s market share has increased from 10% to 14%, representing a 40% year-over-year rise. Now ranked third in the U.S. smartphone market, trailing only Apple and Samsung, Motorola’s phone shipments in July saw an impressive 42% increase compared to the previous year. Motorola has secured the position right behind Samsung in the U.S., a spot that was once held by other companies such as China’s ZTE, South Korea’s LG, and Taiwan’s HTC at different times in the past.
