Meta cancels its Apple Vision Pro rival

Meta has reportedly discontinued its work on the Apple Vision Pro competitor, codenamed La Jolla. Development began in November of last year, with an anticipated release in 2027. However, that is no longer the case. The project’s cancellation is said to be related to the decision to use MicroOLED displays, which significantly increased the cost, exceeding Meta’s initial target of keeping the price below $1,000.

The $3,500 Apple Vision Pro has not turned out to be a major success either. If even Apple struggles to make a high-priced device a bestseller, it may suggest that there isn’t a sufficient market to support two competing high-end headsets.

Referring to the news of the cancellation of the La Jolla headset, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth said, “We have a lot of prototypes in development all the time. But we don’t put them all into production. Decisions like these happen all the time, and stories based on chatter about one single decision will never give the real picture.”

Although the high-end headset has reportedly been canceled, Meta continues to develop a more budget-friendly version of the Quest, known by the codename Ventura, which is anticipated to be released by the end of this year. Additionally, Meta is expected to unveil new AR glasses next month, with the Quest 4 projected to launch in 2026.
