iPhone 16 Pro loses an edge iPhone 15 Pro had over 14 Pro
One of the standout features of the iPhone 15 Pro was its transition from stainless steel to titanium, which reduced the weight of the device—a significant improvement considering the previous models had gained a reputation for being excessively heavy.
However, this year marks a return to heavier devices; despite continuing to use titanium, the new iPhone 16 Pro models are bulkier than last year’s versions. As highlighted by MacRumors, both new Pro models weigh more than their predecessors.
The iPhone 16 Pro has a weight of 199 grams, making it 6.5 percent heavier than the 187 grams of the iPhone 15 Pro. Likewise, the iPhone 16 Pro Max weighs 227 grams, which is 2.5 percent more than the 221 grams of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
This increase in weight was expected due to the larger screens and the rumored inclusion of bigger batteries in both models. Nonetheless, the added weight could impact usability, and while this alone may not exclude these phones from being featured on the best phones of the 2024 list, it could deter some users.
The silver lining is that, despite the added weight, the new models are still lighter than the last stainless steel versions, the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. For reference, the iPhone 14 Pro Max weighs 240 grams, while the iPhone 14 Pro is 206 grams. Additionally, thanks to a reduced moment of inertia, the titanium models may feel lighter than their actual weight.
Furthermore, with Apple equipping the entire lineup with nearly identical chips, the distinction between the Pro and standard models is less pronounced than in the past two years. If you prefer more manageable phones, you might want to opt for one of the standard models instead. Alternatively, you could wait for the next SE model, which is anticipated to launch next year.
