Patent shows new Google Maps feature for group travel
Google has submitted a patent application for a new feature on Google Maps that assists a group of individuals driving together to the same destination by providing them with navigation and turn-by-turn directions. This feature, known as “group navigation,” is specifically designed for multiple people traveling to the same location from different starting points.
This is how the process could potentially function: The initial driver inputs the destination and invites other drivers to join the group. All individuals in the group must have Google accounts as outlined in the patent application. Ultimately, everyone in the group will receive customized directions to the designated location. Additionally, an Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) will be provided to all group members, allowing the first person to arrive to track the expected arrival times of the others in the group.
Furthermore, Google Maps will have the ability to utilize traffic data from the lead vehicle to notify other vehicles about traffic congestion, accidents, and the need for a different route to prevent significant delays. Additionally, the lead vehicle can provide guidance on parking locations, enabling group members to plan ahead and know where to park upon arrival.
In the future, Google Maps may suggest speed changes to ensure all group members reach the destination simultaneously. The patent application also proposes a voice chat feature for group communication during the journey. However, since there are existing methods for group members to stay connected while traveling together, Google may not prioritize developing this feature.
Although there is no certainty that Google will incorporate this feature into Google Maps, it would be a valuable addition to the app, particularly for families who gather annually at a specific location for a road trip. Similar to numerous other tech companies, Google submits a significant number of patent applications annually, with only a small fraction of them ultimately leading to tangible innovations.
