Today, a wild rumor out of Samsung’s headquarters in Korea suggests that the company is considering using MediaTek Dimensity chips for the upcoming Galaxy S25 family, set to launch in January next year. Not only MediaTek chips, specifically MediaTek Dimensity chips (likely the Dimensity 9400), but also the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 and Samsung’s Exynos 2500. If this plan comes to fruition (which is uncertain), the upcoming flagship lineup from Samsung may feature three different SoCs in different regions.
However, it is not guaranteed that this will happen, as the current rumor only suggests that the company may consider it, rather than having already made a decision. The potential motivation for this decision is reportedly Qualcomm’s anticipated increase in price for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, along with the lower-than-expected yields on the Exynos 2500.
The rumored price for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is around $190-200, with the 8 Gen 4 potentially costing as much as $260 per unit. The current yield for the Exynos 2500 is 40%, but a 60% yield is required to begin mass production. Despite this, Samsung aims to enhance the yield by August.
If the Exynos yields remain low and taking into account the high cost of Qualcomm’s upcoming high-end chip, it might be beneficial for Samsung to include MediaTek in their lineup – or at least consider using the possibility as leverage in negotiations with Qualcomm.
